Hey, Fashionistas.
Season Five of Project Runway begins tonight. We’ll be re-dressing our header shortly, in anticipation of a season full of challenges, cattiness and new catch-phrases, as well as the real reason we all tune in: to see just how orange Michael Kors is in any given week. (We’re thinking of posting a scale of some sort.)

The curtain opens on week nine, and the usual morning at the New Gotham.
And so, after several minutes of watching Victorya refer to Sweet P as Kit (I miss Kit), the crew is taken on a field trip to a warehouse full of Levi’s and white cotton. They are to create an iconic denim look.But first, we have a foot race? So, they run, they grab jeans, and they get back to the workroom, and have notions from Levi as well. Predictably, there is no budget, and minimal time. Yay, jeans.
I have to watch this again because Fuzzy called in the middle of it. I’m also under a deadline, and fighting a mild flu so I have zero attention span, and my plan was to go to bed as soon as this was over, but now I’m not so sure. So, I’m writing this during the repeat.
The Challenge:
Am I the only one wondering if the competing models feel kind of screwed this season? I mean, we’re five shows in, and this is the second time (I think?) we’ve had alternative models. Anyway, the official title of this episode is either What’s the Skinny? or Eye Candy depending on where you look it up, and the models are normal women who have lost significant weight (that’s SO gonna be me next year. Just watch.) The twist: their favorite pre-loss outfits are the raw materials. The good news is, the designer who annoys me most got stuck with the polyester wedding dress.
We open with beauty shots of the Gotham apartments and morning banter. The girls are all about having more space now that there’s only three of them, the guys think there should be an eau de Project Runway. I think the machine oil from the pins is making them high.
I had company during the original airing of week three so I couldn’t really pay attention, and I’ve spent today in migraine hell, though I’m slowly coming out of it. I didn’t make notes last week, but I remember telling Fuzzy “Karmen’s going to go,” because she didn’t have a shirt while Sweet P’s, while appalling was at least present.
I remember talking to my mother (who studied at FIT) after the show and asking her, “Is menswear really this hard? I remember you cursing making tiny darts in Barbie clothes, but never any yelling about suits for Ken.”
Her reply was to remind me that Ken is not anatomically correct.
That being said, my overall impression was that a) there should have been less whining and more sewing, b) I was honestly surprised that Elisa was NOT in the bottom three, and c) I was overwhelmed by the stripes provided by Mackenroth. I wouldn’t have picked him for the win, but I’d not have sent him home either.
Warning: I wrote this while hopped up on antihistamines and pain killers - was attacked by fire ants yesterday.
We’re not even 25 minutes into this and I’ve already uttered the phrase OMFG like three times in text with others. (Note, I need to install real time tagging so those of us watching from the same timezone can interact.)
